Gutta-percha Chemical Properties,Uses,Production
Chemical Properties
Gutta percha is a tough horny substance which is essentially non-elastic. It is a crystalline material which can exist in two forms. As obtained from the tree it is in the α-form (m.p. 65°C); rapid cooling of the melt gives the β-form (m.p. 56°C). The β-form slowly reverts to the α-form.
Uses
Gutta percha has a lower water absorption than natural rubber and is a good dielectric. On account of these properties, gutta perch a was once used for underwater cable insulation but it has now been displaced by newer materials.
Preparation
Balata is obtained from the latex of trees grown mainly in Central America. The coagulated material consists of approximately equal amounts of high trans-l,4-polyisoprene and resins.
