Step 1: Preparation of 1-isopropyl-1H-indole-2,3-dione 1H-Indole-2,3-dione (5.0 g, 0.034 mol), iodopropane (6.83 ml, 0.068 mol) and potassium carbonate (9.28 g, 0.068 mol) in DMF (30 ml) are stirred at room temperature for 72 hours. The reaction mixture is diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with water and brine, dried (Na₂SO₄) and evaporated to give the title compound as an orange solid. HPLC r.t. 4.38 min; MS for C₁₁H₁₁NO₂ m/z 190.1 (M+H)⁺.
