C. To a solution of ethyl 2-(2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-yl)acetate (1.1 g, 5.39 mmol) in CH3OH (20 mL) was added sodium hydroxide (0.65 g, 16.17 mmol) and H2O (2 mL). The reaction mixture was heated to 40 °C and stirred at that temperature for 2 h then was concentrated in vacuo.1M aqueous HCl (30 mL) was added to the reaction vessel and the resulting biphasic mixture was extracted with DCM (3 x 50 mL). The organic phase was washed with saturated aqueous NaCl (2 x 25 mL). The combined organics were dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to provide 2-(2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-yl)acetic acid (900 mg, 5.11 mmol) as a white solid.
