It can be synthesized by hydrogenation of 3-cyanopyridine in the presence of a palladium/carbon catalyst.

Steps:

General procedure: 93g (1mol) of 3-methylpyridine was dissolved in 1L of acetic acid to prepare a 10% acetic acid solution,Put it into a 2L autoclave 10, and then add 25g (0.1mol, 10% equivalent) of catalyst (I) and 9g of 68% concentrated nitric acid into the kettle.Seal the reactor 10 and replace the air with oxygen. Under 1atm oxygen pressure,Raise the temperature to 100°C, keep the temperature for 2 hours, then cool to room temperature, and remove the acetic acid under negative pressure.Add 200ml of water and 100ml of ethyl acetate to the residue. After stirring for 0.5h, filter a small amount of black insoluble matter. The filtrate is separated into layers. The upper layer is the product layer. The quantitative analysis yield is 70%.The organic layer desolvates and recovers raw materials and catalysts.
