Steps:

5-Ethyl-2-methylpyridine
5-Ethyl-2-methylpyridine was obtained by the reaction of acetaldehyde with ammonia in an autoclave at150°C and a molar CH3OH : NH3 ratio of 1 : 3. The catalyst concentration was 10 wt %. The reaction timewas 5 h. The reaction products were extracted with methylene chloride and analyzed using GLC. The reaction mass was filtered from the catalyst and isolated by chromatography using a 200-mm column with 30 g SiO2 (eluent, a mixture of hexane and ethylacetate (20 : 80)).
