9-cis-Retinal 是天然的类视黄醇。饮食中的 99-cis-β-carotene 通过裂解成 9-cis-retinoids 生成 9-cis-Retinal。9-cis-Retinal 与细胞视黄醇结合蛋白-I (CRBP-1) 和 CRBP-II 的 Kd 分别为 8 nM 和 5 nM。9-cis-Retinal 加快了视网膜类器官中杆感光细胞的分化和成熟。

The addition of 9-cis-Retinal, instead of the widely used all-trans retinoic acid, accelerates rod photoreceptor differentiation in organoid cultures, with higher rhodopsin expression and more mature mitochondrial morphology evident by day. 9-cis-Retinal can bind opsin to form functioning rhodopsin.
Treatment with 9-cis-retinal produced a significant recovery of the cone response in interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein (IRBP)
