Yield:80-55-7 71%

Reaction Conditions:

with sulfuric acid for 24 h;Reflux;Inert atmosphere;

Steps:

4.1.2.1 Ethyl 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropanoate 21
To a solution of 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid (5.0g, 48mmol) in ethanol (100mL) was added concentrated sulfuric acid (130μL, 2.4mmol) and the mixture was heated at reflux for 24h. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue taken up in water (100mL). The aqueous solution was extracted with dichloromethane (3×50mL), dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated to obtain the ester 21 (4.5g, 71%) as a colourless, volatile liquid, Rf: 0.12 (1:9 ethyl acetate, hexane); IR (vmax (neat)): 3056, 2984, 1725, 1264, 1181, 732cm-1; 1H NMR (300MHz, CDCl3): δ 1.26 (3H, t, J=7.1Hz), 1.39 (6H, s), 3.16 (1H, bs), 4.19 (2H, q, J=7.1Hz) ppm; 13C NMR (75MHz, CDCl3): 14.2, 27.2, 61.8, 72.0, 177.5ppm; LRMS (+ESI) m/z: 155.1 ([M+Na]+ 100%).
