| Ferrous Sulphate Usage And Synthesis |
Description |
Ferrous sulphate is just one of many forms of the metal element iron.In its natural state, the solid mineral resembles small crystals. The crystals are typically a shade of yellow, brown, or bluish-green — hence why ferrous sulfate is sometimes called green vitriol.
| Uses |
Ferrous Sulphate is a type of iron that's used as a medicine to treat and prevent iron deficiency anaemia.
Iron helps the body to make healthy red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body. Some things such as blood loss, pregnancy or too little iron in your diet can make your iron supply drop too low, leading to anaemia.
| Application | Ferrous sulphate is probably the most important salt of iron, as well as the longest-known iron(II) compound. It is used as a mordant in dyeing; as a component of writing ink; in electroplating baths; in radiation dosimeters; in lithography and engraving; as a weed-killer; and in water purification.
| Side effects |
Common side effects include feeling or being sick, constipation and diarrhoea.
| Toxicity |
LD50: 279 to 558 mg/kg (rat, oral, calculated as Fe). GRAS (FDA, § 182.5315, §184.1315, 2000); ADI 0.8 mg Fe/kg (calculated in terms of Fe; FAO/WHO, 2001);
| Precautions | Ferrous sulphate works best when you take it on an empty stomach. If you can, take it 30 minutes before eating, or 2 hours after eating. But if it upsets your stomach, you can take it with or after food.
